Common vintage tatting shuttles found today.
The most commonly found tatting shuttles found today is those in the Boye Needle Company family. James Boye received his first patent in 1917 for his nickel plated swing-arm tatting shuttle. First appearing in 1916, it was marked "Pat.Appld.For". The Boye Company's second patent came in 1923 with a nickel plated removal bobbin shuttle. It is probably the most widely produced shuttle in America. The third shuttle the the Boye Company produced was patented in 1947. It was a flat plastic shuttle produced in four colors for only six years. The final shuttle manufactured by the Boye Company was a conventional plastic shuttle in the same original four colors of white, green, red and yellow.
